A Comparison: Jaguar I-Pace vs. Tesla Model X and Audi e-tron
July 22 2020, Jaguar Vancouver
Enter the era of all-electric vehicles. As the world shifts towards sustainable responsibility, the future of all-electric vehicles is certainly bright. When combined with the ever-rising popularity of the crossover SUV, the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron, and Tesla Model X have naturally piqued the curiosity of car-buyers worldwide as three top competing, premium models worthy of comparison. Which all-electric contender is best, and which is worth the price tag?
We know that the inauguration of the Jaguar I-Pace took the world by storm upon the announcement of its initial 2018 release, and it has since accumulated over 70 awards and accolades to its name—World Car of the Year, Best Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, and Best Premium EV, to name a few. But, how does this highly decorated model compare to tech giant Tesla’s Model X, or Audi’s first all-electric e-tron?
The Price Tag: Value
Each model is a showstopper on its own and has an extensive list of unique attributes to consider. However, the price and value attached is often the primary concern for drivers looking to lease or purchase a new vehicle. The Jaguar I-Pace comes in three trims: S, SE, and HSE. The range-topping HSE comes in at roughly $17,000 less in starting price than Tesla’s entry-level Model X Long Range. The Audi e-tron is offered in Progressiv and Techniq trims, the top of which comes in at slightly less than the I-Pace HSE. For all that follows, the price tag per trim variation is to be considered.
The Journey: Range
While EV drivers can enjoy the eco-conscious freedom of a fuel-free voyage, EV ownership considerations include charging time and the range allotted from a full battery. When utilizing DC rapid charger, or Tesla’s rapid supercharger, the Audi e-tron produces an 80% charge in a short 30 minutes, while the Tesla follows at 40 minutes, and the I-Pace a quick 5 minutes longer. While the Audi e-tron takes the win for fast-charging, the need will be more frequent with only 329 km of range. This is compared to the I-Pace’s respectable 377 km, and the Model X’s impressive 564 km, albeit at a substantially higher price. In terms of value, the Jaguar I-Pace’s respectable range and reasonable price is the likely cause for its Best Premium EV credentials.
The Looks: Interior & Exterior Design
The Tesla Model X is undeniably a car of the future, sure to turn heads with its signature falcon wings. However, in the realms of day-to-day practicality, they may not fit the bill. As automatic doors, they can be slow to open and close, making exit and entry into the back seats a chore.
When compared to the historically sound build quality of the I-Pace and e-tron, the Model X interior leaves much to be desired, often quoted as overly-minimalist with materials that don’t match its classification as a premium vehicle.
The good news with the Audi e-tron is if you’re an Audi fan, you’ll know exactly what you’re in for. Consider it a pro or a con, but Audi’s first all-electric vehicle doesn’t break the mold in innovative design as Audi’s first all-electric vehicle. In fact, it closely resembles the Q5 and Q7. It does include a few minimal design tweaks: a slightly refreshed grille, charge ports on either side and a few more subtle changes, all while carrying forward the reliable build and family-friendly quality that Audi is known for.
The I-Pace on the other hand, while electric, is every bit a classic British Jaguar. The cabin is driver-centric, with plush seating and overly generous console space, offering a sportscar interior with a touch of luxury. It balances modern design with classic Jaguar style, both inside and out. The exterior communicates the aerodynamics of a back-weighted sports car, with the elegance and refinement we’ve come to expect from the Jaguar brand.
The Verdict: Summary
Overall, the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, and Audi e-tron are incredible additions to their respective brands. Sustainable innovation and creative engineering aside, we feel that based on a few factors, there is one standout that gives you the most for your dollar. While the Tesla Model X delivers futuristic falcon doors and an enviable range, upon closer inspection the high price tag doesn’t quite match the practicality and luxury refinement expected from a vehicle in its class. The Audi e-tron is offered at an appealing price along with Audi’s premium standard of build quality and reliability, but falls short on range and innovative styling as their first all-electric flagship vehicle. The Jaguar I-Pace, for us, is a clear winner delivering interior luxury on par with its class, innovative design, sports car exterior styling, and a competitive range for a fair price. In summary, the Jaguar I-Pace offers the best value, at the best price.
